Tune-Yards - Whokill
Every now and then someone comes along whose voice is so distinctive that they seem to have come out of nowhere: Merrill Garbus / Tune-Yards is one of those. Her unique songwriting vision is carried by a rough, lo-fi mix of punk-jazz, art-rock and a little hiphop aesthetics under soulful vocals. Her first album was a huge favourite here: this one is destined to be the same! Pretty much essential...

Belly - Star (COLOURED VINYL LP + CD)
The 1993 classic album reissued as a limited gatefold 2LP edition. Pressed on white marbled vinyl, with CD included. Following her inestimable contributions as a founding member of both Throwing Muses and The Breeders, Tanya Donelly took centre stage to form Belly with brothers Tom and Chris Gorman on guitars and drums respectively and Fred Abong on bass. Around the release of their debut album ‘Star’ in 1993, Fred left the band and was replaced by Gail Greenwood. Among a wave of essential new American guitar acts in the early-90s, it was Belly’s spikey dreampop that helped set them apart. Catching fire with singles ‘Feed The Tree’ and ‘Gepetto’, ‘Star’ saw them grab their moment and catapulted them in to the mainstream, selling almost two million copies worldwide and earning them two Grammy nominations. Coming with updated artwork from Chris Gorman and package design from Chris Bigg, the new version is now spread across two LPs, is being pressed on white marbled vinyl and is presented in a gatefold sleeve. It also includes a bonus CD of the album within.

Bon Iver - Bon Iver
At last: the follow up to ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’, a modern classic if ever there was one. In the meantime Justin Vernon has been busy on collaborations and other projects as diverse as Gayngs, Volcano Choir and Kanye West. 'Bon Iver' takes things on dramatically - fragile and enigmatic, but full of sweeping arrangements taking in horns, pedal steel, strings, flute etc. A bold new chapter in the story of one of the modern era's most singular singer-songwriters.

Here's the one you've been waiting for... Nearly three years on from 'Where Were U In ‘92?', and as expected this is a very different record. Efterklang - Magic Chairs
This is going to surprise a few people, but Efterklang have never been ones to take the obvious route. 'Magic Chairs' sees them embracing pop as never before: lushly arranged, near-orchestral songs with soaring vocals clothed in layers of horns, strings, keyboards and guitar. The closest contemporary relative is probably Wild Beasts, but there's echoes that stretch back to the Associates and Kate Bush too. Grand, elegant chamber pop that opens a new chapter in the story of this most consistently innovative of groups. FREE POSTER WITH INITIAL COPIES!

Deerhunter - Fading Frontier
Fading Frontier is the seventh studio album by Deerhunter. The record was made by founding members Bradford Cox, Lockett Pundt and Moses Archuleta, and bassist Josh McKay. Written in their hometown of Atlanta, GA, production duties were shared by the band and Ben H. Allen III, continuing a collaboration that began with 2010’s Halcyon Digest . Following the death-rattle garage catharsis of 2013’s Monomania , the group has shifted towards something strikingly balanced, focused on melody and texture. The songs are brighter; if not in content, then in the album’s production. Starkness plays against clutter in what is the band’s most complex yet accessible work to date.

Red House Painters - Red House Painters (Bridge)
With the Red House Painters 4AD catalogue having been out of print on vinyl for twenty plus years, it’s high time they were back in the racks. The second of the band’s eponymous albums of 1993 and with a bridge on the cover to give it its unofficial title, this set was shorter, collecting eight more tracks from the studio sessions the band embarked on upon signing to 4AD. Holding back signature classics like ‘Evil’, ‘Uncle Joe’ and 'Blindfold' for this record, it’s arguably the most experimental and darkest of their 4AD releases, almost reflecting the winter month it was released in.

Red House Painters - Ocean Beach / Shock Me
With the Red House Painters 4AD catalogue having been out of print on vinyl for twenty plus years, it’s high time they were back in the racks. ‘Ocean Beach’ / ‘Shock Me’: ‘Ocean Beach’ was originally released in 1995 and was to be the last record Red House Painters released on 4AD. Mostly performed by Mark Kozelek on his own, the minimal, unornamented, reflective and semi-acoustic songs helped him to achieve the more personal album he aimed to record, capturing every sound as it happened rather having it all changed in the mix. Out of print since, it’s now been reformatted to become a double LP that also includes the four-track ‘Shock Me’ EP of 1994.

Various Artists - Day of the Dead
A celebration of The Grateful Dead’s music, ‘Day Of The Dead’ was created and curated by brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National. For both Aaron and Bryce, The Grateful Dead were a gateway to playing music together; the first music the brothers investigated deeply, drawn not just to the Dead’s songwriting but also to the detail, spontaneity and depth in the instrumentation. A life-long love affair with The Dead was born in those teenage years and crested when The National were invited to play a HeadCount.org fundraiser with Bob Weir in March 2012. The band assembled for this event learned over 25 Grateful Dead songs and most of those players went on to form the ‘house band’ heard on many of ‘Day Of The Dead’s tracks. The compilation is a wide-ranging tribute to the songwriting and experimentalism of The Dead which took four years to record and features over 60 artists from varied musical backgrounds, 59 tracks and is almost 6 hours long. Produced by Aaron Dessner and co-produced by Bryce Dessner and Josh Kaufman, many of the tracks feature an all-star house band made up of Aaron, Bryce, fellow National bandmates and brothers Scott and Bryan Devendorf, Josh Kaufman and Conrad Doucette along with Sam Cohen and Walter Martin. The record shows the broad reaching impact and legacy of the Grateful Dead, both culturally and musically. ‘Day Of The Dead’ is released on 5 CDs. All profits will help fight for AIDS / HIV and related health issues around the world through the Red Hot Organization.

Lush - Ciao! Best Of
Formed in London in 1988 and cantered around childhood friends Emma Anderson and Miki Berenyi, Lush expertly fused melody and guitars; a sound that was christened ‘shoegaze’ well after they released their first records, a scene they outlived by sharpening their pop sound as they went. Coinciding with news of the band’s upcoming reformation, ‘Ciao! Best Of Lush’ is finally being pressed on vinyl, previously having only been released as a CD back in 2001.

Debut album From LNZNDRF, the trio of Ben Lanz (Beirut, The National, and Sufjan Stevens) and Scott and Bryan Devendorf (The National). LNZNDRF’s debut is rock minimalism meets sonic maximalism. Recorded in a church in Cincinnati over two and a half days, the eight songs on the album were improvised with a vital spirit harking back to the reason the members became musicians in the first place. The songs, which were edited from 30+ minute jams, evoke the essence of their expansive, largely improvised live shows.

Tim Hecker - Love Streams
Tim Hecker returns... ‘Love Streams’ takes its cues from the avant-classical orchestration and extreme electronic processing of his previous full length (2013’s ‘Virgins’) but shaped into more melancholic, ultraviolet hues. Inspired by notions of 15th century choral scores (particularly those by Josquin des Prez), transposed to an artificial intelligence-era language of digital resonance and bright synths, the album was assembled gradually, with layers of studiotracked keyboards, choir and woodwinds being woven into the mix, then molded and disfigured through complex programming. Like hearing some ancient strain of sacred music corrupted by encryption, Hecker admits to thinking about ideas like “liturgical aesthestics after Yeezus” and the “transcendental voice in the age of auto-tune” during its creation. The ‘Love Streams’ sessions took place throughout 2014 and 2015 at Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavik, Iceland - where parts of both ‘Virgins’ and ‘Ravedeath, 1972’ were tracked - with Hecker reuniting with the same crew of collaborators from ‘Virgins’ (Kara-Lis Coverdale, Grímur Helgason) and bolstered by the Icelandic Choir Ensemble, whose vocal arrangements were scored by Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson. The title of Hecker’s new work can be interpreted any number of ways - erotic, technological, spiritual - although his own conception is appropriately vast, calling it “a riff on the ubiquity and nihilism of streaming of all forms of life.”

Scott Walker - The Childhood Of A Leader (OST)
Scott Walker follows his collaboration with Sunn O))) with this remarkable soundtrack to Brady Corbet’s directorial debut, Walker’s first score work since the Pola X soundtrack in 1999. Partly inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s short story of the same name, The Childhood of a Leader is a tense psychological drama tracing the formative years of a young boy and set against the backdrop of the 1919 Paris Peace Conference that led to the establishment of the Treaty of Versailles. Walker continues to work with long-term collaborators Peter Walsh (co-producer) and Mark Warman (musical director), with the latter conducting an orchestra comprised of 46 string players and 16 brass for the studio recording.

Dead Can Dance - Dead Can Dance
On their eponymous debut album, originally released in 1984, Dead Can Dance successfully harnessed a “bewitching barrage of sounds, layering grinding guitars and even a dulcimer-like yang chin over a taut wash of percussion. If the range of the group is staggering, then so too is their disciplined economy, no song lasting more than four minutes or degenerating into formless cacophony. With the five group members continually interchanging instruments, only the vocals of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry remain as a constant focus”. The 2016 LP version is a repress of the original release.

Dead Can Dance - Spleen And Ideal
Dead Can Dance’s second album, Spleen And Ideal (1985), saw them experiment more with instrumentation, abandoning guitars in favour of cello, trombone and timpani. Widely acclaimed, there was now a richness of unification between voice and music, lyrics and structure, showing they had a concrete sense of the aural ideal they were striving towards. It’s title was taken from Spleen et Idéal, a collection of poems by 18th century French poet Charles Baudelaire. The 2016 LP version is a repress of the original release.

Dead Can Dance - Into The Labyrinth
Into The Labyrinth (1993) is Dead Can Dance’s sixth album, one of their most successful releases, its title a reference to the Greek legend of Theseus going into the Labyrinth to slay the Minotaur. It came when Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard had embarked on more individual personal paths, now writing their songs independent of one another, and on separate continents. Engineered and produced by Brendan at his Quivvy Church studio in Ireland, the album is an audiophile benchmark and also noted for being their first without any guests, instead they played all the instruments. The 2016 LP version is also a double LP like the original release, but comes with brand new cover artwork and an altered track sequence.

Soren Juul - This Moment
‘This Moment’ is the first album by Danish artist Søren Juul to be released under his own name, having previously recorded using the moniker Indians. A deeply personal account of Juul’s life over a tumultuous three-year period, ‘This Moment’ was recorded mainly in Copenhagen and finished in Los Angeles with producer and fellow Dane Peter Stengaard. An uplifting and redemptive work, the immersive soundscapes of the songs reach heights Juul’s work under Indians had hinted at.

Various Artists - Day of the Dead
Beautiful 10LP set marbled in various lovely colours... It's a real delight.

Merchandise - A Corpse Wired For Sound
Galvanized by Tampa hardcore and inspired by its miscreant noise, ‘A Corpse Wired For Sound’ signals a new chapter for Merchandise. Their second for album 4AD, Merchandise have stripped back to the core of Carson Cox (vocals, electronics), Dave Vassalotti (guitar, electronics) and Pat Brady (bass) to make ‘A Corpse Wired For Sound’. The trio travelled to Rosà, Italy to start proceedings, recording half in a studio there and the rest at home, in Tampa as well as in Cox’s newly adopted bases of New York and Berlin. The album’s metallic title is inspired by a science fiction short story by JG Ballard but equally sums up the band’s current state of mind; “We were ‘reborn’ as a rock band for our last record [‘After The End],” says Vassalotti, “and then we straightup died again. It couldn’t last. The result is this distended corpse responding to you from both sides of the Atlantic, forever singing in spite of everything.”

Dead Can Dance - Within The Realm Of The Dying Sun
Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun’: With Dead Can Dance now firmly centred round the core of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, they released their third album ‘Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun’ in the Summer of 1987, showing both a continued maturity in their sound and rise in their popularity. Recorded during an intense period of musical and personal growth for the band, the album’s eight songs are split equally between the duo with the first half being sung by Brendan and the second Lisa. At the time, Q Magazine described the album as combining “superb voice, ethereal church choirs, sweeping strings and a brochure of ethnic music: Middle Eastern, Indian, Moorish, anywhere but London’s East End where the couple resided.” The album’s cover only adds to the album’s aura of mystery with a haunting photograph of the family grave at the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris of famed French biologist François-Vincent Raspail...

SOHN - RENNEN
Since his debut "Tremors" the London-born artist has traded Vienna for the warmth of Los Angeles but the influence of his former home still lingers (Rennen is a German verb meaning ‘to run’). Resuming a nocturnal schedule - as he did with ‘Tremors’ - SOHN spent a month writing alone in northern California, recording until the morning most days. Consciously exercising restraint, SOHN has used only a handful of musical elements on each track, eager to allow the spotlight to shine on the vocals, melodies and rhythms.
