Alternative TV - Viva La Rock 'n' Roll - The Complete Deptford Fun City Recordings 1977-1980
Viva La Rock’n’Roll is a 4-CD box set collating Perry’s entire recorded output for the label, including many recordings available for the first time on CD. Fronted by punk pioneer and Sniffin’ Glue editor Mark Perry, Alternative TV evolved as one of the most exciting independent acts of the original Punk explosion of 1977. Between 1977 and 1980, Mark Perry was behind a string of fascinating post-punk records on Deptford Fun City Records – credited to ATV, the Good Missionaries and Mark Perry solo. ATV’s classic debut album The Image Has Cracked and follow-up Vibing Up The Senile Man are joined by all their singles A’s and B’s, tracks from their shared album What You See… Is What You Are and other rarities, including BBC sessions for John Peel. Mark Perry himself has written the comprehensive sleeve-notes for this landmark release, alongside a wealth of rare visual material within the sizeable booklet. The original artwork for each album is reproduced within the wider ‘clamshell’ box set. Also included are the debut album by The Good Missionaries (Fire From Heaven) and Mark’s solo effort Snappy Turns.

Five Or Six - Cantame Esa Cancion Que Dice,Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Vinilísssimo presents Cántame Esa Canción Que Dice, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah by Five or Six, one of the less heralded acts of the classic Cherry Red era. The LP contains a few cuts from their fantastic early singles and EPs, but Five or Six used this opportunity to offer mostly tracks unavailable elsewhere, all displaying the diverse and immense talent of a band that should be more well known. With echoes of Wire, This Heat, and Joy Division, this is one of the rarest and most outstanding records to come out of British post-punk. Originally released only in Spain in 1982 on the Edigsa label after a string of superb early records on Cherry Red, its limited availability elsewhere has made this LP a highly sought-after item for years.

Telescopes - Splashdown: The Complete Recordings 1990-1992
In early 1990, The Telescopes signed to Creation Records, who were enjoying success with bands like Teenage Fanclub, Ride and Primal Scream. Over the course of 1990-1991, The Telescopes’ sound evolved across three EPs. ‘Precious Little’ retained their earlier menace; ‘Everso’ was dreamier than before while ‘Celeste’ and ‘Flying’ blended psychedelia with a vaguely dancey backbeat. In 1992, The Telescopes unveiled their next album, #Untitled Second, a fascinating assemblage of their influences to date and a work which has matured well and subsequently inspired many so-called Shoegaze bands. Sadly, the band disbanded soon after the LP’s release but reunited a decade later. Curated with the full cooperation of The Telescopes’ frontman Stephen Lawrie, Splashdown is the first-ever compilation to properly document the band’s three-year tenure with Creation Records. The first CD combines their four EPs for the label, with the added bonus of some tracks planned as the B-sides for an abandoned final EP. Disc 2 re-presents the band’s second album, which is joined by bonus material including some cover versions donated to compilations and a previously unissued session for John Peel’s show BBC Radio 1.

Various Artists - Close To The Noise Floor - Formative UK Electronica 1975-1984
Close To The Noise Floor is a 4CD, 61-track set exploring the origins of electronica in the UK. Featuring tracks from key figures on the cassette label underground alongside early releases by future stars of the movement, this is part primitive rave, part synthesiser porn & part history lesson. Enthralled by the mysterious electronics of Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Gong & German Kosmische artists such as Tangerine Dream, Harmonia & Cluster, & inspired by the DIY ethos of punk, a quiet revolution took place across the UK in the late 70s & early 80s. The rise of the microchip & the advent of affordable synthesisers enabled countless artists for whom guitars, drums & bass had become old hat, & in grubby bedsits, unremarkable living rooms & art school halls across the British Isles, UK electronica was born. Exploring every corner of this fascinating & often overlooked chapter in musical history. For proto synth-pop look no further than 100% Manmade Fibre & Spoon Fazer, whilst British Standard Unit & Five Times Of Dust lay out techno templates which wouldn’t take full form until many years later. Elsewhere, the synthesiser laden ambient music of Zorch & the found sound collages of A Tent sit comfortably alongside early forays by familiar names – Blancmange, OMD & Throbbing Gristle – in over four hours of futurist, entirely modern music. Also featuring Chris & Cosey, Thomas Leer, John Foxx, The Passage, Eyeless In Gaza, Human League, British Electric Foundation and lots more.

Various Artists - C87
Imagine if the NME had reconvened a year on from their original compilation? Well, that’s the inspiration for another 70+ tracks, ranging from well-known indie names to obscurities. None of the selections on C87 have been available on any of Cherry Red’s recent compilations. All tracks were recorded and/or released in the year or so following C86 (i.e. summer 1986 to the end of 1987). Disc 1 boasts bands whose first recordings were made in 86/87. Some of them – The House Of Love, The Shamen, The Darling Buds, The Inspiral Carpets, Cud, etc. – later enjoyed chart success. Others have since enjoyed cult status, including Kitchens Of Distinction, whose debut B-side ‘Escape!’ appears here for the first time; The Boy Hairdressers, who would soon evolve into Teenage Fanclub; The Vaselines, who were covered by Nirvana; and The Sea Urchins, who christened Sarah Records with the classic ‘Pristine Christine’. Discs 2 and 3 revisit many of the bands who graced the original C86 cassette, checking in on later recordings by the likes of The Bodines, The Wedding Present, Miaow, The Servants, The Wolfhounds, Mighty Mighty and McCarthy.

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry - Albums And Singles 1982-1989
Four albums, singles, b-sides and remixes. Clamshell box containing replica LP sleeve wallets + booklet. Includes specially commissioned interview with band member David Wolfenden. Spanning seven years of the band’s hypnotically dark, driving rock. 73 tracks spanning 4 CDs! An integral part of the UK’s post punk explosion, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry emerged from Leeds with their unique, demanding sound during the early 1980s. Their first two albums – Talk About The Weather and Paint Your Wagon – emerged on Red Rhino Records before a jump to Situation Two inspired a development in the band’s sound and a broadening of their outlook for the albums Nothing Wrong and Blow. All four vital albums are included here, along with singles, b-sides and remixes, and chart a fascinating history through the 1980s as seen through the eyes of Chris Reed and co. A must for the serious post punk and goth rock enthusiast, and a key part of the incredible musical explosion that took place in the UK during the 1980s.

A year in the making, Noise Reduction System reaches out into the European mainland, taking in tracks from key figures on the electronica cassette label underground alongside early releases by ground-breaking innovators. Enthralled by the mysterious synthesiser and inspired by the DIY ethos of punk, a quiet revolution took place across Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
