Bob & Gene - If This World Were Mine
In 1967, two teenage friends, Bobby Nunn and Eugene Copland, were the stars of Mo Do Records; a Buffalo, NY label run by Bobby’s dad, William Nunn. As BOB & GENE they recorded several sides for the label along with other local gospel and soul artists and the dozen or so 45s on Mo Do play back with unconventional humanity and anomalous presence.

Charles Bradley - Changes
The third album by soul powerhouse Charles Bradley, featuring the Menahan Street Band. The album is named for his popular cover of the Black Sabbath track, previously only available as a Record Store Day 45. By now, Charles Bradley’s remarkable, against-all-odds rise has been well documented: how he transcended a bleak life on the streets and struggled through a series of ill-fitting jobs before finally being discovered by Daptone's Gabriel Roth and releasing his debut album No Time for Dreaming. The year following the release of No Time For Dreaming was one triumph after another and his second album Victim of Love saw Bradley emerging from his past heartaches stronger and more confident, overflowing with love to share.

Como Mamas - Move Upstaris / Count Your Blessings
In December of 2015, the Como Mamas flew up to New York to appear as part of the DAPTONE SUPER SOUL REVUE which was playing three nights at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Not wanting to miss the opportunity to record these amazing singers at the Daptone studio, we booked a recording session for a few days after the show. This time, though, they would be backed by The GLORIFIERS BAND, consisting of top Daptone musicians HOMER STEINWEISS, THOMAS BRENNECK, BOSCO MANN, and JIMMY HILL. The result is an album of raw soulful traditional gospel like you’ve never heard before. Angelia growls the lead on “Move Upstairs,” which shuffles down the line like a freight train. On the flip, Della “counts her blessings” over a grinding four minutes of gospel-funk. Amen , sisters.

Como Mamas - Move Upstairs
With their first two Daptone albums – Get an Understanding, and as featured singers on Como Now – THE COMO MAMAS established themselves as three of the strongest voices in gospel music today. In December of 2015, they cemented that reputation by taking their first trip from their home in Como, MS up to Harlem, NY to crush the Apollo Theater as part of the Daptone Super Soul Revue. Taking full advantage of their presence in town, the Daptone crew brought ESTER MAE WILBOURN, DELLA DANIELS, and ANGELIA TAYLOR into the House of Soul the week after the show to join forces for the first time with the musicians and studio that has defined their label’s sound. JIMMY HILL, THOMAS BRENNECK, HOMER STEINWEISS, and BOSCO MANN, all stalwarts of the Daptone stable, came together as “The Glorifiers Band,” to put down a churning musical foundation for these amazing singers. The results are some of the heaviest tracks that Daptone has cut to date. If you don’t like raw, soulful gospel music, you’re really gonna hate this one. Move Upstairs is a REAL mother!

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings - Soul Of A Woman
Released on the anniversary of her passing, SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS' final studio album, Soul of a Woman is a lush, orchestral masterpiece. A true testament to the life and career of Daptone's fearless leader and one of the world's greatest performers. The songs on Soul Of A Woman exemplify two distinct sides of the band’s sound. Side One showcases grittier, bluesier material like "Matter Of Time" and "Sail On!," giving Sharon the room to flex her vocal prowess and creating a "liveness" that few studio albums posses. Side Two takes on a more sophisticated orchestral mood. Tracks like "When I Saw Your Face" and "These Tears (No Longer For You),” capture a soft vulnerability in Sharon's vocals that draws you deep inside, and yet they remain nuanced with the signature toughness that never allow you to forget she's steering the ship. The finished product is an album that captures a band and a singer at their peak.

James Hunter Six - Whatever It Takes
JAMES HUNTER had already established himself as a permanent fixture in the world of Rhythm and Soul with his five previous albums, each more poignant and well-executed than the last. However, Whatever It Takes has buried them all. His voice has never been more compelling, his songs never more elegantly crafted. Recorded to tape at Daptone's Penrose Studios in Riverside, California, Bosco Mann's production elevates Hunter's arrangements to the altitude they deserve. The needle drops on "I Don't Wanna Be Without You." Saxophones grabbing your collar, pulling you close. Moving you over the undulating curves of a rhumba. The coquettish bubbling of the organ. James words curl casually into your ear, When we met, I was pretty well set in my ways... There is an effortless intimacy here. The casual confidence of a song-smith who has honed his craft beyond reproach. Not just the lyrics, but the melodies, the harmonies, the rhythms, phrasing, all locking into perfect synchronicity. A unified devotion serving only their master's voice. And his voice. Almost violently tender, plucking lyrics off a seemingly endless vine and feeding them to you with the eager patience of a lover. There is a common theme here. It's not a record about infidelity, shallow seductions, fleeting backdoor trysts, or any of the other common clichés of R&B. These are poetic testaments to truer love. Loyalty, devotion, humility, and the inevitable regret of those who take love for granted. Clearly inspired by his new bride, Hunter is singing about the preciousness of a love he plans to keep, Whatever It Takes. James Hunter has certainly paid his dues. Over the span of 30 years, he’s worked on the railway, busked in the streets of London, provided backup vocals and guitar for Van Morrison, played clubs and theatres all over the world, written scores of original songs, and recorded some of the most original and honest rhythm & soul albums of the last two decades.

Orquesta Akokan - Orquesta Akokan
Direct from Cuba! Daptone Records is proud to introduce Orquesta Akokán, a big band collective of Havana's top musicians both young and old, joining forces with some of the most creative and spirited talents of New York's Latin music scene. Featuring all-original music cut live to tape over a three day session at Havana's hallowed state-run Estudios Areito - one of the longest operating studios in the world and where seminal Cuban records have been made since the early '40s, and more contemporarily with the 1997 release of the Buena Vista Social Club album - the group's self titled debut feels like a heartfelt gift from the band to listener. Which is no coincidence being that Akokán is a Yoruba word used in Cuba meaning "from the heart", and indeed every song presented here is just that.
