"Their debut full length exhibits a more refined and expansive sound compared to the bands earlier offerings. Since forming in 2019, Meena have released three EPs, and Different Now seems to be the true unveiling of their complete vision for the project. The record is drenched in lush sounds, hazy shoegaze textures combined with electronic beats and ambient synth swells. From the opening moments, there’s a hint of Primal Scream swagger, flashes of indie psychedelia, buzzing electronics, and a melodic undercurrent, all of which form a kaleidoscopic outcome. It’s an album that builds on their established sonic output while stretching into new areas, balancing hushed tones with a cinematic aesthetic and bursts of musical energy. The album’s creation brought them into collaboration with some of the industry’s most respected names, including celebrated producer and mixer Ben H Allen, known for his work with Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, Soccer Mommy and Deerhunter as well as mastering engineer Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios"
Bringing the synthetic fonk and the shoe-gazed shimmer this is a triumph. 14 freaked-out nuggets that take up 'Meena's' sound to the max. Imagine MBV, Broadcast, Cocteau Twins and Jungle all jammin' in a room and you're a tiny way toward their sound. Very now, very catchy and very essential...built up around the essential blocks of great lyricism, song-writing, musicianship and production. Definitely one's to watch!
